This is a photo of just one of the many early Spring-blooming flower clusters, racemes, of a "temple bells" cultivar of the lovely and sweet-smelling Pieris Japonica bush. The pieris is a genus of seven species of shrubs in the ericaceae family, native to mountain regions of eastern and southern Asia, eastern North America, and Cuba. Pieris species are food plants for various caterpillars, but poisonous to humans (interestingly, toxicity was mentioned on other websites, but not on Wikipedia). Pieris is popular in large garden centers, because of the long ornamental value: The buds are pretty and appear in late Winter, lasting for several weeks, then the small and lovely bell-shape flowers,white and may be trimmed with gold and red, each about 3/8 inch long in many clusters, bloom in Spring and last a week or two, finally the newly emerging leaves are a bright red color, turning green in another week or two.
