Description
This is a photo of just one of the many early Spring-blooming flower clusters, racemes, of a "temple bells" cultivar of the lovely and sweet-smelling Pieris Japonica bush. The pieris is a genus of seven species of shrubs in the ericaceae family, native to mountain regions of eastern and southern Asia, eastern North America, and Cuba. Pieris species are food plants for various caterpillars, but poisonous to humans (interestingly, toxicity was mentioned on other websites, but not on Wikipedia). Pieris is popular in large garden centers, because of the long ornamental value: The buds are pretty and appear in late Winter, lasting for several weeks, then the small and lovely bell-shape flowers, white and may be trimmed with gold and red, each about 3/8 inch long in many clusters, bloom in Spring and last a week or two, finally the newly emerging leaves are a bright red color, turning green in another week or two. Like rhododendrons, also in the ericaceae family, pieris needs an acid soil to do well. There are at least 17 cultivars of this hardy and beautiful evergreen shrub.

I can't tell you how much I love this photo Byron. I have grown Pieris before, but at first glance did not recognize it here as you have so unusually singled out some single blooms .Reminds me of white wisteria. So beautifully done as always. Superb lighting, composition and clarity. v/f
