It occurs to me that the reason, if there is a reason, that I enjoy photographing flowers so much is that each one, to me, is a smile. Call it Nature's smile, or God's smile, or a floral smile, it's a sign that it's good to be alive!
These are tiny Spring Beauties, native to temperate zone eastern North America, and are abundant in forests, wetlands, roadsides, parks and lawns. They flash their ultraviolet smiles to pollinating insects, indicating available nectar. We humans cannot see much of a smile until we get really close, because the flowers are less than an inch across, but we are rewarded by the most charming pink and white curving smiles when close up. We are also rewarded with edible roots with a radish flavor, if we care to pick and peel the chickpea-size tubers. The scientific name of these little beauties is claytonia virginica, and sometimes can be seen as pale pink carpets on an undisturbed lawn.
