Pictured here are a couple of lovely panicles of flowers and buds of a cultivar of garden phlox, phlox paniculata. Phlox is a genus of 67 species, found mostly in N.America (one in Siberia) in diverse habitats from alpine tundra to open woodland to prairie. Some flower in Spring, some in Summer, some in Fall. Flowers may be pale blue, violet, pink, red or white, and with various colored centers. Many are fragrant. Species heights range from a few inches,eg, creeping phlox, to four feet tall, eg, garden phlox. Phlox have been extensively cultivated as garden plants and there are many dozens of cultivars available. The word �phlox� is directly from Greek and means �flame� in that language. Phlox is a food source for various insects, and popular with groundhogs, rabbits and deer. [from Wikipedia].
