Don't know why tradescantia is widely known as "Wandering Jew", probably because of its ability to spread and survive in diverse locations. Also widely known as spiderwort.I was on hand when a friend pulled this beauty out of her garden years ago (eastern PA) having dubbed it a weed, and I was struck by its wonderful forms and colors. I took it home and photographed it with my then new (2001?) Nikon Coolpix, resulting in a pretty but small image. Wish I would have rescued and replanted her "weeds"! There are several tradescantia species, with white, blue and purple petals. I read that they are an invasive species and pest in Southeast USA, but also popular as a houseplant and garden flower.
