Dressed completely in black and grasping a spear, like a Darth Vader with tail and wings, this dragonfly rests at the edge of a lotus pond. But seriously, folks, this is the only all-black dragonfly I ever saw ( have seen black damselflies). Seen among the mainly blue dragonflies of this particular pond. Dragonflies are classified as anisoptera, and belong to the order, odonata, which includes damselflies as well, and comprises about 5700 species. These mighty little predators don't bite humans, but do a great job of gobbling up mosquitoes and any other flying insects smaller than themselves, with unmatched flying abilities for speed and maneuvering.
