Description
These amazing 'slipper orchids' are native to Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands, growing on the forest floor. The pouch traps insects seeking nectar, and to leave they have to climb up past the staminode, where they brush up against it and pollinate the plant(!)

Brenda, Cindy, thanks so much! Cindy, I photographed these in 2012. The exhibits are often moved around at Longwood, so it's not always possible to get a clear shot of what one might like to capture.

Byron, This is another of your many fabulous florals. I like the descriptions. You are educating me about flowers/pollination and so much more. Also, I like the play on words in the title. Very clever and witty. (I used a similar title for my painting of a Siamese cat.) Shine on! anne
