Description
Iris is a genus of hundreds of species of showy flowers, and widely used to refer to all iris species. This particular flower was a winner at a recent iris show. The word itself is derived from the Greek word for rainbow, which also is used to identify the colored part of the eye, brown blue, hazel, green, that controls the size of the pupil. Irises began their trip across the world after Thutmose, an Egyptian pharoah and flower aficionado, conquered Syria, which was rich in wild irises. They have been cultivated and hybridized ever since (~1479 BC)!
The iris flower itself, besides being beautiful, is also brilliant in attracting pollinators and guiding them to deposit any pollen theyre carrying onto the female reproductive parts on the way to the nectar near the male reproductive parts. There, they will be guided to pick up pollen and exit in a way that does not deposit this pollen on the female parts! All this by brilliant anatomical design! Ive spent an hour reading up on this and still cant visualize the process; will be in touch with an iris society in a few weeks and hope to have it clarified then. Will let you know! : )
