Description
These striking exotic red flowers are orchids of the Disa genus, consisting of about 170 species, native to South Africa, Madagascar, and along the Western Indian Ocean. These are D.Uniflora, popularly named Pride of Table Mountain, for a flat-topped mountain overlooking Capetown, South Africa, and providing spectacular scenic views. The mountain has a rich and unique biodiversity, with an extremely high concentration of threatened species. Its geologic and biologic history, with later human influence, is most interesting. Once very rare in cultivation, disa uniflora is gaining in popularity as a cut flower. However, they are difficult to grow, because of the needed mineralogical composition of the soil. Also, as they grow invery wet environments, they can easily be killed by rot in cultivation. (information from Wikipedia). But don't let you orchid enthusiasts be discouraged! : )
