Description
A bee (honeybee?) approaches a wood poppy flower on an early May afternoon.
The wood poppy, a member of the papveraceae family, is a herbaceous perrenial native to moist woodlands in eastern North America, and valued for its pretty yellow flowers. The plants grow up to about 18 inches tall. Its scientific name is stylophorum diphyllum and is also commonly known as poppywort, yellow poppy and celandine-poppy. It has been listed as an endangered species by Ontario, with losses attributed to forest clearance. I saw these lovely flowers in a Pennsylvania garden, where they bloom from early Spring to early Summer, under full to part shade. I hope that seemingly relentless human population growth does not further decimate the other species that make Earth wonderful.
