Description
This is close up photo of a lovely Erythronium americanum, with common names of trout lily, yellow trout lily, and yellow dogtooth violet, depending on the area it is found in. It is within the family Liliaceae. It got the name trout lily from the coloring of its gray-green leaves mottled with gray or brown, that resemble the coloring of a brook trout. It blooms in early Spring with one-inch yellow flowers, and lives in colonies that can be up to 300 years old. They range from southern Canada south to Georgia, west to Mississippi and north to Minnesota. These herbaceous flowering plants send up a single flower stem with a pair of leaves, a cheerful sight on the forest floor in Springtime. This flower was photographed in eastern Pennsylvania in mid-April.
