Description
A photo I took last Summer at the lotus pond at Chanticleer Garden, in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The lotuses in this pond are hybrids of the Asiatic lotus, nelumbo nucifera, and American lotus, nelumbo lutea. This hybrid is called "Lotus Mrs. Perry D. Slocum", named after the wife of botanist hybridizer, Perry Slocum.
Lotus flowers and leaves are large and spectacular. The lotus flower, particularly the tropical nelumbo nucifera, besides being gracefully beautiful and providing nourishing seeds, is a widespread symbol in spiritual literature. From a seed in the soil under a pond, a graceful flower rises above the water untouched by any impurities. This is analogous to the view that sees the soul as ever pure, no matter the impurities of body and mind.
