Description
Chionodoxa flowers (Greek for 'glory of the snow') are small and bright, about one inch across, on short stems, and bloom in early Spring. They are native to the Eastern Mediterranean alpine areas, specifically, Crete, Cyprus, and Turkey and, like crocuses, often bloom during snowmelt.
These were photographed in a Pennsylvania garden in early April. Planted with Scilla, small blue umbrella shaped daisies, similar in size to the 'glories', the two make a beautiful azure carpet for April gardens. Both the chionodoxa and scilla genuses are in the subfamily scilloideae, in case you were interested. Some chionodoxa species are pink, and some white, and are popular garden plants, available as bulbs. They are naturalized across parts of Europe and the Americas.
