Description
A small amber hoverfly browses on a hydrangea blossom; its dark stripes help it imitate a bee. Lacecaps are interesting in that the flowers on the outside, the ones in the center of the petals, are sterile. It is the many flowers on top that are fertile and get all the visits from nectar-seeking insects. They bloom in random succession; blue stamen and white anthers can be seen on the ones in present bloom. Hydrangeas, blooming in early Summer, are native to mountainous areas of the Far East, and their beauty has resulted in them now gracing the whole planet.
