Description
Don't know why tradescantia is widely known as "Wandering Jew", probably because of its ability to spread and survive in diverse locations. Also widely known as spiderwort.I was on hand when a friend pulled this beauty out of her garden years ago (eastern PA) having dubbed it a weed, and I was struck by its wonderful forms and colors. I took it home and photographed it with my then new (2001?) Nikon Coolpix, resulting in a pretty but small image. Wish I would have rescued and replanted her "weeds"! There are several tradescantia species, with white, blue and purple petals. I read that they are an invasive species and pest in Southeast USA, but also popular as a houseplant and garden flower.

Years ago we grew these in our apartment in Boston. Not sure where they came from. I thought them to be a wonderful plant. Excellent photography and description. --- v/f
