Description
Photo of a beautiful deep red hibiscus blossom with buds and leaves in a Pennsylvania garden. This flower is known by many names, including marsh mallow, rose mallow, texas star; and is one of many hybrids of hibiscus wildflowers native to North America. American hibiscus flowers are available in many colors, with flowers from three to twelve inches in diameter, and are easy to grow, hardy up to zone 4. They are distinct from the also beautiful Chinese Hibiscus, hibiscus rose-sinensis, that has flowers in many colors, generally smaller than the American. An interesting tidbit: the marshmallows all americans are familiar with, made of sugar, were named after the marsh mallow plant. Native Americans, and later, European settlers, ate the roasted roots. However, the plant was of a different genus, althea officianalis, that resembles the hibiiscus and also grows in marshy areas. Confusing enough for me!

Byron, you have made this rich crimson hibiscus bloom into a magnificent floral composition. The leaves and buds seem to have arranged themselves in perfect balance of light and form, and there is still room for the lovely background fading- out of harmonious color. Such a joy to view this. L/F
