Description
Lovely water garden scene with a blue dragonfly perched on a beautiful tropical "Egyptian Blue Lotus" waterlily flower, while a Japanese Beetle seems to be munching holes in a petal on another flower. These blossoms are shown widely in ancient Egyptian mythological paintings. These days they are used in aromatherapy and other popular medicine. The waterlilies, nymphaea caerulea, are native to Central and North Africa. They are distantly related to the Indian Sacred Lotus, nelumbo nucifera, and both contain mildly psychoactive sedating alkaloids.
The lotus flower, particularly the tropical nelumbo nucifera, besides being gracefully beautiful and providing nourishing seeds, is a widespread symbol in spiritual literature. From a seed in the soil under a pond, a graceful flower rises above the water untouched by any impurities. This is analogous to the view that sees Soul as ever pure, no matter the impurities of body and mind.
